"It's getting dark," Greg said, packing a blanket and two flashlights into a duffel bag. "We should probably head out now."

I looked back at Greg and smiled. I closed my laptop and abandoned the work I had been occupying myself with for most of the afternoon.

"Well, let's go then," I said, already headed for the door, my boyfriend close behind.

Outside, Greg took the lead, holding onto my hand and guiding me across the large back yard that was behind the house. Pulling out the two flashlights he had packed minutes earlier, he handed one to me.

"You might want to take this," Greg said, "You'll need it to see holes and low hanging branches and stuff."

Greg turned and I smiled at his back, following him through the dense woods. I was exited. Tonight marked six months of Greg and I being together and we decided that a perfect way to spent it would be by watching the 4th of July fireworks. It had always been a fantasy of mine to roll out a blanket, enjoy a show, and then fall asleep in my boyfriend's arms under the stars and now Greg was giving me the chance to fulfill it.

"How much longer?" I asked after what felt like forever of walking but had really only been five minutes. "My feet are killing me!"

Greg glanced back at me and shook his head disapprovingly.

"I told you not to wear those shoes."

"But I like them!" I whined.

"High heels, forests, and hills don't make for the perfect equation, Jennifer."

"But-" I started to speak again but was silenced by Greg gripping me tightly by the waist and hauling me over his shoulder.

"Greg!" I whined more. "Put me down!"

"Nope. You were complaining about your feet hurting. I'm only trying to help."

I sighed and kept my mouth shut for the rest of the trek though the woods. The only time I spoke was to point out to Greg that I could see his ass.

"You like what you see though," he replied.

I couldn't argue with that.

Eventually we made it out of the woods and to the top of the hill. Greg lowered me to the ground and laid me down gently in the grass, placing a swift kiss on my forehead. He pulled the blanket out of the backpack, replacing it with our flashlights. He wrapped the blanket around my body and held me tight. I cuddled against my boyfriend and nuzzled the crook of his neck.

"I love you," I whispered into Greg's ear.

"I love you too," he whispered back. Just as he was about to say something else, he was interrupted by a high pitched whistle and then a loud bang. We both looked up and saw that the fireworks had started.

"They're beautiful," I said, awestruck.

"Just like you," Greg whispered again. I was thankful that the color of the fireworks were the same color as my blushing face, disguising my embarrassment.

Greg and I sat watching the fireworks for a few minutes until he tired of watching the explosives and decided to watch me instead. I looked up at him looking down at me. I immediately melted in my boyfriend's lap. The way the explosive colors danced about in my boyfriend's eyes gave me chills. I couldn't help but wrap my arms around his neck and pull him in close for a kiss.

Breaking away from my lips, Greg addressed me.

"Jennifer, I have to ask you a question."

"What?"

Greg pulled away from me and I watched him dig around in his pocket and pull out a small black box.

"Do you know what's inside?" Greg asked.

I knew very well what was inside, however I couldn't answer because I had lost my ability to form coherent words.

Not being able to wait for an answer, Greg opened the box and produced a diamond ring. At that moment the world seemed to stop spinning. I couldn't hear the fireworks or Greg's voice anymore. I could only see the colors of the explosives dancing inside the diamond prism Greg held in his hands and his lips forming words, asking me to marry him.

Suddenly everything was back in motion again and I was crying, still trying to find words to answer Greg. Finally I choked out a 'yes' and my boyfriend, now fiancé, slowly slipped the engagement ring onto my finger.

"You're all I-"

The rest of my fiancé's sentence was drowned out by the sound of numerous fireworks being let off into the sky.

'It must be the finale,' I thought. 'Perfect timing!'

I was hypnotized by the fireworks. They were the only thing convincing me that what was happening was real and not a dream. Surely the exploding sounds would have woken me, had I been sleeping. Although, Greg wasn't as interested in the fireworks as I was. He was more concerned with his lover than the rockets in the sky.

My fiancé lowered me to the ground and for the second time that night, I watched the lights dance I his eyes, but for moments only. Greg was quick and eager to undress me, covering my body with kisses.

"What are you doing?" I asked, gasping as one of his many kisses turned into a bite.

"Making love… To you," Greg said between bites and kisses. "We're going to… Make love…"

I felt my body tense at Greg's words. I know he felt my tension too because he had abandoned nuzzling my body with his mouth to gently caress my cheeks and softly kiss my forehead.

"It's okay. Everything is going to be alright, princess."

At the sound of an endearment, I relaxed. With every reassuring word my fiancé whispered to me, I relaxed even more. Eventually I developed the boldness to wrap my legs around Greg's waist and told him, almost begged him to take me.

It would be our first time having sex together. It would be my first time having sex at all. I was ready though. There wasn't a single other person that existed who I'd rather give up my innocence to. My fiancé was the only one who was worth it.

We spent the whole night making love. An entire late evening of giving and getting pleasure from each other under a sky of exploding colors and stars.

Happy anniversary and engagement to us.
Here is a late Independence Day short story. Something similar to this happened on my 4th of July (save for the engagement).

The fireworks picture is not my own. Just search "fireworks" on Flickr and it should pop up on the very first page. I only added the small white border around it.
